Developed by Blockchain at Berkeley and faculty from UC Berkeley's
premier Computer Science department, this course presents Bitcoin
and cryptocurrencies as the motivation for blockchain technologies,
and provides a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the
fundamental concepts of the crypto space with a particular emphasis
on Bitcoin.
The course covers basic properties of bitcoin, the
mechanics behind it (e.g. including cryptographic hash functions,
Bitcoin Script, privacy, and hash commitment schemes) and its roots
in the Cypherpunk movement and Libertarian ideals. You'll learn
about practical applications of Bitcoin such as wallets and mining,
as well as how to destroy bitcoins, including network attacks and
malicious mining strategies. We will also take a brief look at
Ethereum and how blockchain can be used outside of
cryptocurrencies.

Once heralded as the ultimate vehicle for open communication and
self-expression, the internet is rapidly becoming a globally networked
surveillance device. Serious threats to national security, combined with
the seemingly endless capacity of digital processing and storage, have
led to levels of data capture and 24/7 monitoring of individuals’
activity that were unimaginable even a decade ago.
With resistance to such practices rising, this course equips individuals
to take an active part in the debate. You will gain a broad
understanding of the competing tensions of the laws related to national
security and personal and commercial privacy in the post-Snowden online
environment. You will also grasp the looming consequences of this battle
for peace, sovereignty, human rights and the internet itself.
Project management is an essential skill-set for many careers and in
many contexts in our lives.
To deliver a project successfully, it’s important to start by
clearly identifying what the project is, and what its outcomes will
be. This course demonstrates practical ways to explore and
understand goals from the outset of a project, and to consider all
the factors that may affect its execution. Learning how to plan,
scope, schedule, cost and manage your project from beginning to end.
Since every project relies on the people who are delivering it, the
course also enables you to explore how you can effectively
communicate, manage people and employ leadership skills to
successfully deliver your own project. Additionally you will learn
practical ways to use project management skills, whether the project
is large or small.
This contract law course, with new materials and updated case examples, is designed to introduce the range of issues that arise when entering and enforcing contracts. The course also investigates common pitfalls: one-sided promises, mistake, fraud, and frustration.
Like no other event in recent history, the 2014 Ebola outbreak has made
clear the fragility of existing health systems. While responding to the
current epidemic is critical, we also have an opportunity to learn
lessons to prevent the next global health catastrophe, forge
partnerships across borders and disciplines, and demonstrate our
commitment to value all human lives.
This course provides the context in which to understand the Ebola
outbreak — why now, and why did so many people suffer and die? The
course lays out the global governance structure — what was the global
response supposed to look like, and where did it fail?
The course features practitioners, experts, and scholars who will focus
on cultivating a better understanding of the Ebola epidemic and
implications for future health systems to ensure that the world is more
effective in preventing the next pandemic.
Super-Earths and Life is a course about alien life, how we search for
it, and what this teaches us about our place in the universe.
In the past decade astronomers have made incredible advances in the
discovery of planets outside our solar system. Thirty years ago, we knew
only of the planets in our own solar system. Now we know of thousands
circling nearby stars.
Meanwhile, biologists have gained a strong understanding of how life
evolved on our own planet, all the way back to the earliest cells. We
can describe how simple molecules can assemble themselves into the
building blocks of life, and how those building blocks might have become
the cells that make up our bodies today.
Super-Earths and Life is all about how these two fields together -
astronomy and biology
Dog Emotion and Cognition is an introduction to the exciting new study of dog psychology, what the latest discoveries tell us about how dogs think and feel about us, and how we can use this new knowledge to further strengthen our relationship with our best friends.
To really understand what is special about Bitcoin, we need to
understand how it works at a technical level. This and other important
questions about Bitcoin were addressed in this program, such as:
How does Bitcoin work? What makes Bitcoin different? How secure are your
Bitcoins? How anonymous are Bitcoin users? What determines the price of
Bitcoins? Can cryptocurrencies be regulated? What might the future hold?
This certification program provides the conceptual foundations needed to
engineer secure software that interacts with the Bitcoin network.
Additionally learning the ability to be able to integrate ideas from
Bitcoin in your own projects.
"No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow."
"The whole educational and professional training system is a very elaborate filter, which just weeds out people who are too independent, and who think for themselves, and who don’t know how to be submissive, and so on – because they’re dysfunctional to the institutions."
I've never made big money with what I learned in school. In our information based
society it is more useful to learn how to find facts rather than memorize them,
how to make sales, build wealth, and how to react creatively to change. In my
experience,
schooling does little more than obliging people to accept the grading system as a
measure
of their inner excellence.
We are no longer living in the Industrial Era and need
not continue churning out obedient workers and consumers

"Schools are designed on the assumption that there is a secret to everything in life; that the quality of life depends upon knowing that secret; that secrets can only be known in orderly successions; and that only teachers can properly reveal these secrets. An individual with a schooled mind conceives of the world as a pyramid of classified packages accessible only to those who carry the proper tags."
